Tackling Burnout: Simple Steps to Recharge Your Batteries

""To bring about change, you must not be afraid to take the first step. We will fail when we fail to try. - Rosa Parks

Burnout is a deeply personal journey, one that shows up uniquely for each of us. It's not just about feeling tired; it's about losing that spark, that passion, that drive that once fueled us. So, let's pause for a moment. How does burnout show up in your life? Is it the relentless exhaustion that seems to cling to you like a shadow? Or perhaps it's the creeping sense of detachment, making it harder to connect with your patients and loved ones? Whatever form it takes, acknowledging its existence is the first step toward healing.

What does burnout feel like to you? Take some time to sit with it and have a moment of self-reflection. Grab a journal, jot down your thoughts, your feelings, your behaviors. This isn't about assigning blame, increasing guilt, or feeling inadequate; it's about gaining clarity and insight into your own experience. As you document your journey, you'll start to notice patterns, areas where change is not only possible but necessary.

Recovering from burnout is a journey that requires patience and a multi-faceted approach, one that may need adjustment as you progress and evolve. Here are some straightforward ideas you can start implementing today without consuming hours of your time, aimed at alleviating some of the strain. While these suggestions may seem basic (they are!!), they're designed to be easily integrated into your daily routine without the need for a major overhaul.

  • Mini Meditation Moments: Take a breather, my friend. Literally. Try a quick two-minute meditation using an app like Calm. It's like a reset button for your brain. Do it before you head into work, or after work as you try to leave all the ick at the office.

  • Friendship Fuel: When was the last time you grabbed dinner with friends? Schedule in some friend time in the next month, even if it's just a quick coffee catch-up. Connection is the ultimate soul food. These are your people. You need them.

  • Move That Bod: Who works through lunch? I know it happens often! Can you take one lunch break a week (or once every other week) and get out of the building? Walk around the building, breathe in fresh air, listen to your favorite music, or go take a power nap in your car. One lunch break a week, that’s it.

  • Reach Out: Feeling stuck? It happens to the best of us. Don't hesitate to reach out for support.
